Continuing the recent tradition of posts about features hiding in plain sight, the ‘Automatically Add to iTunes’ folder is (I suspect) an underused method of getting music into Apple’s long-standing entry into the World Bloatware Championships.
I’ve long since given up on using iTunes to play songs, but it remains very good at keeping a large collection of music organised. So, any new MP3 files I rip or otherwise obtain are dropped into this special folder, ready to be imported next time iTunes starts up1.
In the meantime, mpd is pointed at both my main music directory, and ‘Automatically Add to iTunes’, so I can play stuff regardless of where it happens to be.
When I know an iOS update is out, worry that I haven’t backed up my iPhone/iPad in a while or suddenly decide I hate all the music on my iPhone. ↩
